Monday 2nd February.

Completion of branding project.

When looking at the final collection of fabrics I have created for this branding project aimed at Issey Miyake, overall I am happy with the outcomes. I am glad that I had the chance to experiment and aim my work at a different context, and I really enjoyed working with heat setting polyester, and I think that the final samples I produced using this technique are the most successful and interesting.

Personally, I think that my colour compositional work and the colours in my final samples are the most successful points of this unit of work. If I was to improve on this work, I would love to take longer in experimenting and pushing this heat set process, as I feel like it could develop into something really interesting and unusual.

Self Initiated Project development.

In hope to get the chance to develop and support my context for my whole practice as a student, I have been in contact and have applied for a volunteering role at Manchester Art Gallery. Having a passion for contemporary art and gallery spaces has drawn me to this, as I would love to pursue a career under this category and so this would be a fantastic opportunity to be involved in.

In terms of my self initiated project, a second tutorial with Amy this week has been very helpful in decisions about yarn colour, quality and knit techniques I want to include in my pieces of knit.  I intend to reflect and interpret the concepts and ideas behind my visual imagery, through different textural qualities and techniques within my knit pieces. For example, representing the weaker structure of the city that has been effected by poverty and uneven distribution of economic growth with fine yarns- in the colours that represent the negative connotations (reds, oranges, blacks) and in contrast, representing the economic growth in the stronger layers and connotations of the city in much more fancy, smooth, flourishing yarns.  I love the idea of these pieces representing and changing through these different structures and qualities, communicating these different emotions as intended in my concept.

Monday 26th January.

This week has been heavily focussed on my branding project for Issey Miyake due to the deadline for completion being next week. I recieved positive feedback in todays tutorial on the imagery I have produced and the sampling which I have produced this week. I'm really happy with the way that my colours have come along from the paper folding and inky photoshop work I have done, and these qualities are transferring well into my samples.
I will continue to experiment and reflect these colour proporations and quality within my final collection of samples.

The polyester yarn that I have been using is working well, and I really like the shiny and soft feel it gives to my samples. Furthermore, it holds the heat set shaping really well and this is a  tecnique I will defintily be using a lot of within my final collection due to its success. This could be developed and experimented with in many different ways, in different shapes and sizes which is exciting.

Dubied Pleating.

I would also like to develop this pleating technique on the dubied machines, as I think that the way it reflects my brand Issey Miyake is very succesful, and also compliments the other techniqes I have been experimenting with. I intend to experiment with different types of pleating, and the colour proporation within the pieces.

Monday 19th January.

Over Christmas, I spent time exploring the city and capturing contrasts through photography and drawings as a starting point for my visual research for my self initiated project. I'm happy with how this went, as the process of exploring the city and recognising things that are usually overlooked when walking through the fast pace of the city is a really interesting and inspiring practice.

Example of creating coloured textural pieces.

I am keen to use this imagery in an abstract way, as I don’t want my visual research to become very structures and building like, as previous work contains a lot of that type of imagery. Instead I would like to focus much more on developing into these images with colour, and dissecting them into segments of interesting line qualities and textures. These fragments of imagery will be as important where they are not (empty spaces/transparencies) as where they are, as this distortion and absence reinforces and suggests my concept.

In terms of the branding project, I have made a decision that the brand I will be focusing on and creating a collection of samples for will be Issey Miyake. This has come from an interest and inspiration that I have always had from the work of Miyake, and my love for structural fabrics. I am particularly fond of the s/s15 collection, due to this new heat set process Miyake has discovered, and so I will be focusing on using my own version of this with my knitted fabrics.
